About Dementia Care Strategies
Kathryn Pears, MPPM, is a dementia expert who trains and consults with families, health and long term care professionals and facilities, and community agencies. She specializes in the understanding and the non-pharmacologic management of the challenging behaviors that occur with dementia. Personally and professionally involved in the field of dementia for over 30 years, her interest in dementia began in 1981 when her father was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease at the age of 56.

Prior to starting her own company she was with the Alzheimer’s Association, Maine Chapter for 20 years where she developed numerous innovative and highly respected educational programs for family caregivers, law enforcement, hospital staff, intellectual and developmental disability group homes, and a variety of long term care facilities and home health agencies. She also served as the registered lobbyist for the chapter and lead the effort to make Maine one of the first states in the country to require special care unit disclosure for nursing homes, mandated training on dementia for nursing home staff, and a Silver Alert to mobilize law enforcement and the public when a person with dementia wanders and goes missing. Kathryn also the co-chairs the National Task Group on Intellectual Disabilities and Dementia Practices (NTG) Training & Education Committee that has developed a national model curriculum on intellectual/developmental disabilities and dementia.  She is co-lead trainer for the NTG workshops and has presented the NTG model curriculum in over 21 states.

Her clients have included the Maine Department of Health and Human Services, the Maine Developmental Disabilities Council, Trinitas Regional Medical Center in New Jersey, and numerous long term care facilities and home health agencies. A Master Trainer for the evidence-based Savvy Caregiver Program for family caregivers, her passion is helping family caregivers and professionals understand how dementia impacts the person with the disease, manage and accommodate challenging behaviors, and provide the highest quality of life possible for those living with dementia.
